Shawn Gadadders, on trial for stealing peppers from a Bourda Market vendor, will spend the next six months in jail after finally admitting to the crime.
His admission came during cross-examination by Mayor and City Council Constabulary Prosecutor James Garnett in a city court yesterday.
Gadadders, who has no fixed place of abode, had initially maintained his innocence when he was charged with the December 18 theft. He was accused of stealing a basket of peppers from Rajee Seechand at Bourda Market on Robb Street. It was alleged that he saw Seechand’s basket of peppers, took it without permission and ran away.
Garnett told the court that despite Seechand calling out to the defendant, he continued running. He was subsequently caught and charged with simple larceny.
Under cross-examination, the prosecutor informed the defendant, who claimed he picked up the basket of pepper to throw it in a garbage bin on Robb Street because it was rotten, that there were no refuse bins on the street. Garnett further put it to Gadadders that both sides of the street are occupied by vendors. The stunned Gadadders then changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond.
