The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is offering to restore water service to customers who had been disconnected free of cost, once they have started repayments, particularly via the company’s ‘Wallet Friendly Payment Plans.’
GWI said its inspectors will be visiting areas where it recently conducted its disconnection campaign to distribute letters urging customers to make use of the recently launched ‘Operation Reconnect’ facility which will allow them to reconnect their service without penalty fees. Customers with large outstanding service charges are invited to utilise GWI’s flexible payments plans which allow them to repay large debts in small amounts designed to suit their incomes and budgets.
According to Customer Services Manager, Jeanette Thomas, the company was offering this option to its customers as it received alarming reports of customers reconnecting their services illegally which had an adverse impact on its revenue collection last month. Thomas said the company has no other option than to remove the entire service from these customers.
“It is our last resort to remove the entire service of a disconnected customer since that customer will have to pay the full cost of a new service,” Thomas said in a press release from the GWI. “Commencing…March 4, 2014 disconnected customers are only required to pay their outstanding service charges if payment is made within three (3) working days; we are waiving all reconnection and tampering fees.”
“It is our priority to reconnect customers rather than remove their service,” Thomas said, adding that “if no payments are made following receipt of ‘service removal’ warning letters we will be forced to remove all services which were disconnected and illegally reconnected.”
GWI urges all disconnected customers to make payments via the wide range of options it has made available, and avoid the expense of having their services removed and having to apply for a new connection. ‘Operation Reconnect’ will initially focus on Georgetown customers but the programme will be executed in other areas by April.
