Citizens Against Rape (CAR) is hosting a march titled ‘Rising Against Rape’ on Saturday, March 8th from the Umana Yana, to put a spotlight on the “rape culture” in Guyana and develop strategies to arrest it.
Established by Dr Raquel Thomas-Caesar, Nicolette Roach, Colleen McEwan, Nicole Cole, Margo Boyce and Jessica Xavier, the newly formed group is highlighting the issue with a view to strengthening laws to protect rape victims and bring perpetrators to justice. The march is set to move off at 7 am.
“Currently, in a study highlighted by the Guyana Human Rights Association, the rate of convictions for cases going to court is [one] percent,” the group said in a press release. “Rape is a violation of rights, rape is a crime.”
CAR will focus on rejuvenation, restoration and rehabilitation of victims. The group also believes that steps need to be taken to foster behaviour change among youth.
Participants are asked to walk in silence to demonstrate solidarity with rape victims who have been “silenced” and/or prevented from pursuing justice. Supporters can also bear banners and slogans. The walk will end with a short programme in the Promenade Gardens.
The CAR team has collaborated with several local organisations that have been working over the years to stop abuse, to ensure that this activity is successful. The team is grateful to all the companies, organisations and individuals that have thrown their support behind this function.
