Work is expected to begin soon to repair several toilets at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus.
This is according to the University of Guyana (UG) Public Relations Officer Paulette Paul, who told Stabroek News that the administration is aware of the problems and is looking to deal with them speedily.
“A contract has been awarded for the rehabilitation of these toilets, and works are expected to commence shortly,” Paul said.
On Monday, Richard Rambarran, President of the University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS), had revealed that the student association decided to close four toilets; two at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and two at the Spicy Dish cafeteria on campus.
He said the UGSS decided to take drastic measures after they were not in an acceptable standard to be used by students. “One particular toilet has been backed up for more than a semester and that the system needs a complete makeover,” he stressed.
Paul acknowledged that the toilets at Spicy Dish were an ongoing problem for the UG administration and added that they were making strides to address this. She said too that the toilets at the Natural Sciences Faculty were fixed on Monday. “…So, now it is up and running,” she said.
She, however, also appealed to students of the campus to make proper use of the toilets. “We do have problems with how students use the toilets and we are asking for them to use the toilets for what they are intended to be used for,” she stated.
