Helena Primary School defeated Zealand Primary to become champions of the Upper East Coast zone of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Festival played yesterday at Fairfield ground, Mahaicony.
Led by captain Shamal Taylor’s innings of 19, Helena, which batted first, made 162-7 from their 10 overs.
Taylor received support from Dilshan Ramnarine (11) and Devon Thomas with whom he shared a 31-run, second wicket partnership.
Bowling for Zealand Primary, Osaye Hamid, Sheriffa Shepperd and Crystal Cramer collected two wickets each. In their turn at the crease Zealand Primary fell short by 13 runs, although they were afforded 24 runs in extras owing to wayward bowling by the Helena bowlers.
The ended on 149-4.
Helena Primary will now join Lower East Coast Champion Beterverwagt-ing Primary School in the East Coast District final while they await the winners of the Central East Coast zone.
Earlier in the day Carlton Hall lost to Zealand Primary School by 10 runs in the semifinal of the Mahaicony zone.
Carlton Hall batted first and registered 136-6 from 10 overs. The Munilall brothers Andre and Antonio made 18 and 13 runs respectively.
Tamia Dodson (2-5) and Sherrifa Shepperd (2-6) were the chief wicket takers for Zealand, who, in reply made 145-5. Andy Peters top scored with 10 and extras contributed 32.
The second game, which was also the final of the Mahaicony zone, saw a matchup between Zealand Primary and De Hoop who drew the bye through to the final. Zealand Primary duly recorded a 72-run victory to move on to the final. Batting first De Hoop could only manage to score 110-5 at the end of 10 overs, with Dodson and Mahendra Singh taking two wickets each.
Zealand in reply produced a strong batting performance only losing two wickets to end their innings at 182-2. The innings was assisted with 24 extras. Hosea Hamid top scored with 13.
Helena advanced to the final of the Upper East Coast Zone after defeating Virginia Primary in the semifinal and Mahaica in the final played last Tuesday at the Helena Primary School ground.
Scores from the semifinals:-Helena 144-6 in 10 overs(Devon Thomas 16, Shamal Taylor 12;Collis Wiltshire and Nandita Cheddi picking up two wickets each) defeated Virginia Primary 124 all out in 10 overs (Kevin Chapman 12, with Khemraj Doodnauth and Shemica Williamson the chief wicket takers with 2 wickets each) by 20 runs.
The competition continues tomorrow with matches to be played at Enterprise Ground, East Coast Demerara.
