The Ministry of Education has announced that children born on or before June 30, 2011 are now eligible for placement at nursery school.
According to a press release, registration for the new school term in September has started and parents and guardians are encouraged to register their children, in the year that they turn age three, at a school closest to their home.
The ministry will consider allowing parents who do not have a caregiver to look after their child after school hours to register the child closest to the workplace of the parent, depending on the space available at the particular school. In such cases, the parent will be asked to provide a letter from their place of employment. However, a parent who is employed at a school will be given priority amongst parents who appeal a placement.
Parents or guardians must have in their possession the child’s birth certificate and clinic card at the time of registration. They are also encouraged to take along their national identification card and proof of address. Registration forms can be downloaded from the ministry’s website www.education.gov.gy to facilitate a quicker registration process.
