A short tempered labourer was sentenced to seven months in jail yesterday after he was found guilty of assaulting a vendor and damaging her spectacles.
Winsford Campbell, 38, had denied that on January 30, at Water Street, he assaulted Carol Ann Maria Frank. He also denied that he on the same day damaged her spectacles, valued at $23,000.
It was the police’s case that Campbell approached Frank, who vends in the area,to keep his bicycle. According to Police Prosecutor, Cadet Officer, Collin Primus, Frank closed shop at 5:50pm and waited for a while on Campbell. He said Frank took the bicycle to Tiger Bay and left it with Orin Apple to give it to Campbell.
The prosecutor said that it was when Frank was walking south on Water Street, in the company of a female called ‘Micey,’ that Campbell, who is known for behaving disorderly, approached her, kicked her on the right side of her back and chopped her on the neck with his hand, causing her to land on the ground in front of National Hardware. Primus said that the presence of three security guards from the business resulted in Campbell running away. Frank was then rescued, while her attacker was later apprehended and charged.
The court was told that Frank acquired a medical certificate from a doctor to prove her injuries.
At the end of his trial yesterday, city magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond, found Campbell guilty and sentenced him to three months for assaulting the woman, while he was fined $50,000 with an alternative of four months imprisonment, for damaging Frank’s spectacles. Campbell told the Magistrate that he could not pay the fine.
The sentences are to be served concurrently.
