A man who was allegedly caught with over 100 grammes of cannabis hidden in a lunch bowl was yesterday remanded to prison after denying the charge in a city courtroom.
Marvin James, 26, of 59 Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, had been nabbed on Wednesday during a stop-and-search conducted by police ranks in the Stabroek Market area. According to the police’s case against James, he had been acting suspiciously and had caught the attention of the patrolling ranks. He was stopped and a search was carried out on a haversack in his possession. During the search, the police found 122 grammes of marijuana, stuffed in a green and white bowl.
James pleaded not guilty to the trafficking of narcotics charge when it was read to him yesterday.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence as his reasons. He further added that the defendant had raised no special reasons for the consideration of bail. The unrepresented man was therefore remanded to prison by Magistrate Ann McLennan until March 24 when he will make his next appearance for reports and fixtures.
