A South Better Hope man is now on remand, after he appeared in court yesterday, charged with the theft of over $200,000 from a family friend.
Daniel Standford, of 137 Fourth Street, denied that on March 1, at Church Street, he stole $80,000, US$515 ($103,000), Cdn$250 or ($42,500) and Sur$30, property of Bibi Tasleema Taba.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that the defendant went to Taba’s home and asked to use the washroom. Sometime after, Taba’s mother, who was at home at the time, saw Standford running out of Taba’s bedroom with money falling out of his pocket. The mother immediately made checks, only to discover that the drawer in which the money was kept bare, Jones said. A report was made and Standford was subsequently arrested and charged.
Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded Standford, after she found Jones’s objection sufficient. He objected on the grounds of the prevalence of the offence, that the defendant was caught red-handed and because he stole from his family friend.
The case will be called again on March 21, for statements.
