Enterprise Primary yesterday defeated Strathspey by 51 runs to win the Central East Coast district of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Festival played at the Enterprise ground, East Coast Demerara.
Led by an entertaining innings of 24 runs with four huge sixes from Edmond Pearson, Enterprise, who opted to bat first made 173-6 at the end of their 10 overs.
Strathspey’s bowlers had earlier begun with two maiden overs but Pearson batting in the lower order capitalized on any loose delivery scoring 12 runs in the penultimate and final overs.
Clinton Alexander supported Pearson with 16 runs that contained two boundaries and a maximum. Enterprise’s total was helped by 20 extras as only Tyrese Brown bowled accurately, picking up 2-2 along the way.
In reply Strathspey Primary struggled to reach their eventual total of 122-7 due to the constant loss of wickets. Batting for Strathspey, Aaliyah Trotz and Randy Andrews were the top scorers with 14 and 10 runs respectively, while Annika Layne and Edmond Pearson who bowled the final over which was a maiden took two wickets each for Enterprise.
Enterprise will now join Lower East Coast champions Beterverwagting and Upper East Coast champions Helena to compete for the East Coast title, on a date set to be announced soon by GCB. Earlier, an exciting and eventful semifinal between Annandale and Strathspey Primary school initially ended with a tie. After taking first strike Strathspey Primary made 137-6 from their 10 overs, with Aru Hinds and Darren Benjamin making 14 and 10 respectively. Bowling for Enterprise, Beyonce Jackson was the chief wicket taker with 2-5.
In their turn at the crease, Annandale had to face up to some good bowling and fielding by the hardworking Strathspey’s students who were trying everything to prevent Annandale from completing a victory. Delwyn Boyce (12) batted responsibly to ensure his team got as close to the winning target, but some careless batting in the closing overs by his team mates meant they could only managed a tie. Annandale ended at 137-4 from their 10 overs, with Crystal Alphonso the most effective bowler for Strathspey Primary.
Strathspey overcame all nerves to end the bowl off as winners. Their bowlers hit the wicket two out of five times, while Annandale bowlers missed the wicket in all of their five attempts.
The competition will continue on Tuesday with West Coast Berbice zone finals at D’ Edward ground West Coast Berbice.
