Guyana yesterday crashed to a disastrous 94 all out compliments of a cohesive bowling performance by defending champions Barbados who romped to a comfortable 136-run win on day three in round two of the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Regional 4-day tournament played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The right-hand medium-pacer Carlos Brathwaite, tore into the Guyana line capturing 4 for 35 while Nurse administered his medication for the hapless Guyanese courtesy of his slow off-break bowling which rewarded him with 3 for 39. Lanky left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn was also effective snapping up two wickets for eight runs.
Wicket-Keeper Anthony Bramble and West Indies Test spinner Veerasammy Permaul top scored with 21 runs each, while Tagenarine Chanderpaul battled for his 14. No other player was able to surpass 15, as the Guyanese were humbled on their home turf in the presence of a sprinkling of supporters in 42.3 overs.
Guyana, who bowled out their Bajan counterparts for 184 in the first innings were unable to seize the opportunity to lay a heavy foundation after resuming their first batting innings on 35 without loss and were eventually bundled out for a measly 140 runs on day two.
Openers Sewnarine Chattergoon (50) and Chanderpaul (41) added 91 for the first wicket before spinners Benn (5-28) and Nurse (3-51) razed the Guyanese batting order. Barbados, who yesterday resumed on their overnight score of 116 for 4 after the loss of their top order quartet in; Rashidi Boucher (36), top-scorer from the last game Roston Chase (30), skipper Kraigg Braithwaite (5) and Jonathan Carter (19) were dismissed for 186 in 75 overs.
Former West Indies spinner Devendra Bishoo grabbed his 10th first-class 5-wicket haul ending with 5 for 71 off 21 overs and was the chief destroyers for the Guyanese bowlers who for the second time in the match dismissed the defending champions for under 200 runs. Permaul (26-6-54-2), Keon Joseph (11-5-15-1), Raun Johnson (6-1-18-1) and Narsingh Deonarine (10-3-20-1) also utilized the pink ball with great efficiency.
Day three’s first blow came when Kevin Stoute who dug in for his 28 was caught in the slip by Chris Barnwell off Bishoo, while wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich made a useful 23 before he edged a regulation catch to Bramble off Permaul’s left-arm spin.
The all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite was pinned lbw by Permaul for 23, while Bishoo mopped up the tail when the trio of Nurse (2), Benn (20) and Tino Best (2) were sent packing, leaving Miguel Cummins stranded on 5.
During the local team’s chase the pair of Chattergoon (9) and Chanderpaul were cautious and went into the lunch break with one run on the board, a bye conceded of the bowling of Best. Upon the resumption of play the young Chanderpaul opened his account with a cover drive off Nurse while Chattergoon straight drove Best for his first boundary of the match as well.
The 11th over saw Chattergoon’s stumps being knocked over by Brathwaite as Guyana lost their first wicket for 22 runs. The all-rounder struck again in the 21st over, this time landing a trifecta of crucial blows to the Guyanese middle-order immediately after the drinks break.
left-hander Assad Fudadin was trapped lbw for 12, Deonarine ,who has so far been more effective with the ball than bat recorded his second duck of the game when he had his off-stump disturbed off the first ball he faced and Vishal “Cheesy” Singh (1), who is the team’s in-form batsman was unfortunately ran out after attempting a single.
Barnwell (4) then became Brathwaite’s fourth victim when he edged a delivery to Dowrich behind the stumps. After 98 minutes of seeing off the faster bowlers and striking two fours, Chanderpaul was then softly given out lbw compliments of Nurse leaving the Guyanese reeling at 43 for 6.
The team’s 50 came in the 31st over with Bramble and Bishoo (3) at the crease looking to repair the damage before Nurse struck again removing the leg-break bowler leaving the home side hanging on at 55 for 7 at the tea break.
The red-hot Brathwaite was then involved in the dismissal of Bramble who clobbered him for huge six, only to be caught at mid-wicket by Brathwaite in the next over off the bowling of Nurse. Soon after Permaul was pinned lbw by Benn as they Guyanese stared closely at defeat.
The final nail was hammered into the coffin when Joseph was caught and bowled by Benn, leaving Johnson unbeaten on one. The third round of the tournament begins on Thursday as the Guyanese will seek revenge against the Windward Islands at the Providence Stadium.
The match is set to bowl off at 10:00hrs.
