Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis will this afternoon clash in the final of the boys’ singles competition of the Assuria Invitational Classic lawn tennis four- category tournament at the Le Ressouvenir Tennis Court.
The match will begin at 5.30pm.
That match will be followed by a men’s singles encounter between Leyland Leacock and Khalif Gobin.
Tomorrow, in Ladies singles action Afruica Gentle will play Jamaali Homer before Lewis takes on Gobin in a men’s singles encounter.
The competition continues Friday with the men’s Over 35 final between Carlos Adams and Godfrey Lowden
while in the final men’s singles round robin encounter between Lopes and Leacock will conclude the tournament.
Meanwhile Lowden and Adams dominated the second week of competition to advance to the men’s 35 and over final.
Both Lowden and Adams played undefeated in their group. Lowden, the top men’s 35 and over player in the country and the top seed in Group B, showed no mercy as he defeated popular veteran player Rudy Grant in the group stage 6-1 and 6-4.
Lowden also won his other game in the group a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Steve David-Longe. David-Longe ended group B in second place after he defeated Grant 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in a hard fought three setter. The much fancied Adams also played undefeated in Group A where he competed against Mario Niamatalli and Harry Panday. Adams, known for his vocal outbursts was relatively tame during his on court performance in his straight set defeat of his group A opponents. He made a comprehensive start with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over prudent tennis lover Harry Panday. His second match up was against third seed in the group Mario Niamatalli whom he defeated 6-1, 6-0 to reach the final.
Niamatalli placed second after defeating Panday in straights sets 6-1, 6-4 to complete Group A’s matches.
In the ladies singles category girls champ Nicola Ramdyhan and junior sensation Afruica Gentle, in their group clash, amazed the spectators with their hitting power.
Ramdyhan eventually edged out a close win at 7-6, 6-4. Berbician veteran player Carol Humphrey, recently recovered from knee injury, was beaten by 14-year-old Homer 7-5, 6-4. But Homer was subsequently easily defeated by Ramdyhan 6-4, 6-1.
In the men’s singles, boys champ Lewis stunned Leyland Leacock in a grueling three-setter 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. Leacock, a seasoned player and assistant national coach, seemed to be in control initially with his flawless placement of the ball but it was the stamina and power of Lewis that was his demise. In the other match Lopes defeated Gobin 6-0, 6-3.
