BASSETERRE, St Kitts, CMC – Wicketkeeper Devon Smith hit an unbeaten half-century in a crucial partnership with West Indies opener Kieran Powell, to rally the Leeward Islands and set up an interesting final day of their second round, Regional Four-Day clash against Jamaica.
Playing on Sunday’s penultimate day at Warner Park in the day/night contest, Smith stroked 53 and Powell, 33, to guide the Leewards to 117 for three at the close – a lead of 88 runs.
The pair have already added 77 for the fourth wicket and the stand was required when the Leewards slipped to 40 for three, after conceding a first innings lead of 29 to Jamaica.
Earlier, Jamaica were dismissed for 351, after resuming the day on 212 for three.
Opener John Campbell added just seven runs to his overnight 103, before becoming one of leg-spinner Anthony Martin’s four wickets for 77 runs.
David Bernard Jr stroked 45 not out, Jermaine Blackwood got 33 while Jamie Merchant scored 26, as seamer Gavin Tonge finished with three for 65 to support Martin.
The Leewards then lost three quick wickets before Thomas counter-attacked, smashing seven fours and a six in a knock that has so far lasted just 59 balls.
Powell has been the perfect foil, facing 111 balls in 2-1/2 hours at the crease, and striking four fours.
