The Puran Brothers Disposal Inc Essequibo Branch along with some other groups conducted a clean-up campaign on Sunday in Charity, Essequibo Coast.
The project, which was a joint effort of the Charity/Urasara Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), several private owned businesses, the President Youth Award Republic of Guyana (PYARG) and Puran Brothers, has garnered praise from residents of the area.
Prior to the start of the campaign, members of the PYARG distributed free garbage bags to persons
living in the area and encouraged them to place all waste in the bags. The garbage was then collected by Puran Brothers on Sunday last.
Branch Manager of the company Priya Mohabir said the project was aimed at promoting cleanliness since Charity was in a terrible state because of the garbage. She added that 60 persons living in the area have since registered with the company and 51 bins were distributed to aid in the proper disposal of garbage.
When contacted by this publication, Overseer of the Charity/Urasara NDC Samuel Sooklall noted that the campaign was successful. He said he was quite pleased that Puran Brothers Disposal Inc collaborated with the other entities to clean up Charity. “The Charity NDC provided two tractors and trailers to work along with the Puran Brothers and also some of the workforce,” Sooklall said. Regional Chairman of Region Two Parmanand Persaud also praised the efforts of those who participated in the campaign.
A resident of Charity told Stabroek News that even though he is impressed with the campaign, a greater effort should have been made. “After hearing about the clean-up campaign and upon checking, I honestly believed that the work that was done could have been better,” he said. “Somebody working undercover should be employed to seek out the litterbugs and charge them.
When I checked the area where the garbage bins are on Sunday afternoon, the place was still messy. It was also brought to my attention that the garbage handlers had no gloves on and no other protective gear. I think that is wrong and it should not have been done.”
The garbage situation in Charity has been an ongoing issue and despite efforts made by the NDC to deal with it, it remains a problem.
