A 12-member jury has been empanelled for the re-trial of accused wife killer Ganesh Narine in the High Court.
Narine, who is charged with killing his wife Krishandai Singh in 2009, was ordered to face a re-trial in October 2013,
after a jury failed to reach a unanimous decision on his case.
Members of the previous jury had returned to Justice James Bovell-Drakes after three hours of deliberations and said they were unable to decide on a verdict. Three jurors believed that he was guilty while the other nine were in favour of a not guilty verdict.
Standing in the prisoner’s dock, in his second trial, Narine pleaded not guilty to the murder charge before the jurors and Justice Navindra Singh.
The trial continues tomorrow with a voir dire.
Meanwhile, the re-trial of Carl Bennett for the murder of Marvin Boston, who was stabbed to death during a family feud in October 2009, began on Tuesday in the High Court.
Bennett was ordered to face a re-trial after a 12-member jury could not arrive at a unanimous decision in the High Court in May 23, 2013. Justice Navindra Singh, who presided over the trial, remanded him to prison after the jurors declined further direction that could have assisted them in arriving at a verdict.
Bennett pleaded not guilty on Tuesday before Justice William Ramlal in the High Court. He is being represented by attorney-at-law Hukumchand, while the state’s case is being presented by Mercedes Thompson in association with Natasha Backer.
