No mail delivery service for Potaro Road residents

Dear Editor,

Among the issues residents living along the Potaro Road have been complaining of to the Bartica United Youth Development Group is the non-delivery of mail to their homes, and that sometimes when they go to the post office to uplift their mail they have to spend a lot of time searching through boxes for it.

On February 17, a meeting was held between myself and Ms Dorcas Chance, manager of the Bartica Post Office. I made reference to the Potaro Road residents, including those in the Four Miles Scheme and the newly opened Five Miles Scheme, etc.

I stated that the post office had a responsibility to provide an efficient service to all the residents of Region 7, and that there had been a massive increase in population along the Potaro Road. Ms Chance responded that for my request to be granted more workers would have to be employed, and she was not authorized to employ any worker without permission from the officer responsible for Region 7 who is stationed at the Georgetown Post Office.

On February 28 I travelled to Georgetown and met with Mr Henry Dundas, Post Master General, and made a request for mail to be delivered to the homes of the Potaro Road residents.

Mr Dundas proposed installing mail boxes at one location in the area for which the residents would have the keys. I said that any mail boxes would have to be located at a police station compound or some other secure place, and Mr Dundas agreed, then saying the Post Office would put a system in place starting from the coming week (last week) to have mail delivered to the homes of Potaro Road residents. He said the Post Office would employ a worker who will use the motorbike which is presently being repaired to provide the delivery service once or twice a week.

To date no mail has been delivered to any of the residents living along the Potato Road, but it is expected that the Bartica Post Office will fulfil its mandate and provide mail delivery service to all of the residents of Region 7.

Yours faithfully,
Micah Williams
