Action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) division one and division two leagues will resume following a lengthy hiatus on Saturday and Sunday respectively at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground on Vlissengen Road and Carifesta Avenue.
The division one section which will be played on a two round basis, will feature the higher ranked clubs within the Georgetown fraternity that are not currently competing in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National League.
These eight clubs are Northern Rangers, Pele FC, Camptown FC, Georgetown Football Club (GFC), Guyana Police Force (GPF), Flamingo FC, Beacon FC and Fruta Conquerors FC.
There will be a total of 56 matches and each win will be worth three points. A drawn match will earn both sides one point while a loss will see no points earned. The two clubs with the least amount of points upon the conclusion of the event will be relegated to division two.
The winning team will pocket a first prize package of $1,000,000 and trophy while second and third place finishers will receive $700,000 and $500,000 and trophies. The fourth placed side will receive $300,000 and the respective accolade.
The division two section which will consist of the lower ranked teams as well as the reserve sides of the clubs featuring in the GFF National Premier League, will be played on a one round basis.
The competing clubs are Alpha United, Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Riddim Squad, BK Western Tigers, Santos FC, University of Guyana (UG), Houston Stars and Black Pearl FC. There will be a total of 28 matches during the league’s duration.
Each win will be worth three points while one point will be earned by both sides for a draw. No point will be gained for a loss. Conversely the club with the most points upon the conclusion of the tournament will be elevated to division one and will pocket $500,000 and the first place trophy.
The second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 and corresponding trophy respectively.
In the opening doubleheader of the first division sides, Bourda based club GFC will face off with Kitty outfit Northern Rangers in the event’s opener at 18:30hrs while the feature contest at 20:30hrs will witness the battle of the juices as Sunburst Camptown engages arch-rivals Fruta Conquerors.
The second division card on Sunday will see UG battling West Ruimveldt giants Western Tigers from 13:00hrs while Santos FC will tackle Houston Stars from 15:00hrs.
Prior to the commencement of the respective leagues, a march past featuring all the sides competing in both leagues will be held on the opening night of the first division league.
