Dear Editor,
I live next door to the Kitty Market and obliquely opposite where construction is taking place at 20 A Shell Road Kitty. What is taking place is beyond understanding and could be considered nothing short of advantage being taken of a weak and ineffective system.
The owner of the building where the construction is taking place is an overseas-based Guyanese and most of the work is done during the night.
One morning, I woke to find a concrete pavement (some parts being as high as fifteen inches) from his fence to the roadway, over the drain and parapet. To make matters worse, he ran a chain through some steel uprights and placed concrete blocks to prevent pedestrians walking on it. Pedestrians now have to virtually walk in the middle of the road. To further complicate matters, the builders’ waste is thrown on the opposite side of the road (outside the Kitty Market) further denying persons and vehicular traffic, unimpeded passage.
I spoke with the owner of the property explaining the breach he was committing but he told me very bluntly that he wanted it that way.
This situation is particularly frustrating and is further compounded by the dilapidated state of the western fence of the Kitty Market which is at the eastern side of my home. The fence has been falling to pieces over the last two years and despite complaints to, and promises by the City Engineer, the situation seems to be getting progressively worse.
I sincerely hope this letter will cause some action to be taken.
Yours faithfully,
Patrick C Holder
