Christine Sukhram is expected to number among the 40 golfers competing tomorrow from 12 noon in the inaugural Sanjay’s Jewellery Golf Pairs Tournament at the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC).
According to President of LGC, Jerome Khan, 40 players have already registered for the tournament making it a big competition as the most regarded matches would normally host a maximum of 32 players. He was also eager to dispel the view that golf is an elite sport and invited spectators to take part in the game saying that the course is open to all.
LGC captain Chatterpaul Deo said the club is already buzzing with excitement over this innovative format of play where golfers will play in pairs against each other, with the combined lowest score per pair determining the winners. Deo explained that the format will allow players to use 3/4 of their existing handicap playing a stroke system.
“This is the first time this system would be use and is a trial run for another competition later in the year, which will determine winners to represent Guyana in a Regional International Pairs Tournament,” he said.
Alfred Mentore and Brian Hackett playing as a pair last year placed fifth in the Caribbean Play-offs held at the Millennium Golf Club in Trinidad and Tobago, which featured representatives from Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Antigua, Jamaica, St Kitts and players from the twin-island republic.
While he didn’t make any predictions, Deo said the current ground conditions provide equal opportunity for all players and he would not be surprised if a pair of ‘dark horses’ emerges from the pack.

Sanjay’s Jewellery which sponsored two tournaments last year will have a full complement of staff and well-wishers on hand for the post tournament festivities and presentation, a representative of the company said.
