Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday ordered an investigation after a man who lost his eye when he was stabbed by another with a broken bottle accused the police of stalling the case.
Lennox Williams’s alleged assailant, Orlando Carrington, 50, of 2966 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown was not required to plead to the offence which accused him of unlawful wounding. He was also granted $100,000 bail over the matter which occurred on February 8.
According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, the two men had a misunderstanding which led to a physical altercation during which Carrington stabbed Williams in the eye with the broken bottle.
Williams, who appeared in court with a large bandage over his right eye, explained to Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry that he had lost his eye due to the incident. He then claimed that the police had been plotting to destroy the medical report which substantiated his claims. When questioned, Prosecutor Grant informed the magistrate that the medical report was waiting to be uplifted from the hospital.
Williams later said that the police were also deliberately stalling the defendant’s prosecution and accepting bribes. Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry ordered the prosecutor to investigate the virtual complainant’s allegations due to their serious nature.
In an application for reasonable bail, attorney-at-law Patrice Henry stated that his client, a mason and a father of two, had an unblemished record. There was no objection to bail.
Carrington was granted $100,000 bail on the condition that he lodge his passport and report to an officer every fortnight on Friday afternoons.
His matter was adjourned until April 23 when he will return for reports and fixtures.
