An inspired second half team performance propelled Fruta Conquerors to a 3-1 victory over arch-rivals Sunburst Camptown when Georgetown Football Association (GFA) division one league commenced on Saturday.
Played at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground on Vlissengen and Carifesta Avenue, the Tucville based side would open the early scoring in the 24th minute through a Jermaine Junior strike into the roof of the net after collecting a left sided Dwayne Lawrence pass.
However, their lead would be short-lived as the Campbellville side found the equaliser eight minutes later compliments of a right sided left footed freekick from veteran Troy Prescod, which went through the hands of the opposing custodian and settled into the net.
Unable to change the score line for the remainder of the half, Fruta Conquerors would retake the lead in the 60th minute as Kareem Knights found the back of the net.
Stealing the ball off the foot of the Camptown right-back from a goal kick, Knights, upon cutting into the box, would place his right footed effort into the lower left hand corner, giving Camptown custodian Oswald Cornette simply no chance.
The result would be sealed in the 76th minute as Lawrence etched his name on the scorer’s sheet. Latching onto a pass from midfield following a quickly taken freekick, Lawrence would place his right footed effort into the lower left hand corner to seal the vital three points.
In the opening fixture of the league, Bourda based side the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) edged Kitty outfit Northern Rangers by a 1-0 score line through a Keron Solomon 51st minute effort.
Prior to the commencement of the league, a march past featuring the participants in the division one and division two leagues occurred while Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Christopher Matthias delivered the feature address and ceremonial opening kick.
