Former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) private Abiola Jacobs, accused of murdering her boyfriend’s mother in January, was yesterday ordered to stop all communications with the deceased’s family after the court gained information that she was in contact with them.
Jacobs had made her first appearance in court on February 5, 2014 charged with the January 31 murder of Donna Taylor, the mother of her boyfriend. The 55-year-old Taylor was discovered in the backyard of her 1617 Public Road, Agricola home with her throat slit. British national Samantha Sabat, who had been a houseguest of Taylor’s and Taylor’s son’s alleged paramour, was found unconscious in the front yard.
According to reports, Sabat had suffered a broken arm and head injuries after jumping from the verandah of the Agricola home in a bid to escape.
In yesterday’s proceedings, Prosecutor Bharat Mangru informed Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that Jacobs had made contact with the deceased’s family via telephone and through letters and requested that she be ordered to desist further correspondence.
Jacobs’ attorney Mark Thompson said he had no knowledge of any attempts by his client to contact the family. He then quickly conferred with Jacobs who informed him that the dead woman’s son had contacted her, not the other way around. Jacobs was nevertheless ordered to cease all interactions with Taylor’s relatives.
Prosecutor Mangru also informed Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry that three statements were still outstanding and requested 2 weeks for the completion of investigations.
However, Thompson noted that statements are constantly coming in and asked for a date for the start of the preliminary inquiry instead.
Jacobs will return on May 6 for the commencement of the PI when the prosecution will call at least one of its 17 witnesses to testify against her.
