Two men are currently nursing gunshot wounds at the New Amsterdam Hospital, Berbice following a robbery.
Bannsingh Guyadin, 72, of Kilmarnock Corentyne was shot in his left leg (close to his ankle) and robbed of little over $500,000, while Kissoondat Madhoo, 30, of Bush Lot Corentyne, was shot in both of his legs. At the time of the incident, the men in the company of three other persons were returning to Guyadin’s residence, after spending the day at a horse racing meet.
Guyadin, a director and first vice president of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club, was in charge of running the bar at the event and had returned home sometime around 19:00 hrs on Sunday, to unload the unsold stock when the robbery took place.
“After manning the bar all day, I had my workmen load everything in the truck and take it to my residence. It was while the truck was reversing in my yard and I was walking towards the stairs at the front of my house, that two men jumped out and told me to lie down,” Guyadin related. Demanding that Guyadin drop the bag containing the money, the armed robbers allegedly discharged four rounds, hitting both Guyadin and Madhoo.
Guyadin went on to explain, that when he dropped the bag, one of the masked men grabbed it and escaped using the rear of his property.
It was a neighbour who rendered assistance to the injured men, as the other workers fled the scene on hearing the gunshots and were fearful of returning.
Meanwhile, Madhoo who is currently in a hospital bed alongside his boss said that prior to being shot he was unaware that his employer was being robbed. “The place was dark, and I was standing behind the truck waiting to unload it. I was like 10 to 15 feet away from him [Guyadin]. The next thing I know I felt sharp pain in my legs and was falling to the ground. It was when I heard one of the men say ‘drop the bag and lie down’ that I realize what was happening,” Madhoo explained.
The father of one said he was glad that the men seemed more interested in robbing them than killing them, noting that his main concern now was when the doctors would speak to him. “Since last night they admit us, and do x-ray but they are yet to tell us anything.
All they saying is that they will give us anti-biotics to prevent any infections. But they ain’t saying nothing about removing the bullets.
This thing hurting bad, bad,” Madhoo said.
Guyadin expressed similar sentiments, saying he was “disgusted with the treatment; they only dressing the wound, nothing else. I got to live with the thing [bullet] inside of me.” He bemoaned the fact that after running the bar for numerous horse racing meets over the past 26 years, it was in his old age, when his body is intolerable to pain he was robbed and shot.
Guyadin lives alone, while Madhoo lives with his wife and two year old daughter.
Police are investigating the robbery.
