Godfrey Pereira of lot 58 Fifth Street, Alberttown appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in Court One on a simple larceny charge after it was alleged that he along with Dwayne Wallace and others choked and robbed Deodat Singh on Quamina Street relieving him of articles worth $16,240 on March 20.
According to Police Prosecutor Michael Grant, the two defendants approached Singh while he was traversing Quamina Street on his bicycle. The court was told that Wallace choked Singh and relieved him of his bicycle while Pereira emptied the pockets of the victim. Wallace, 24, resides at lot 88 Melanie Damishana and works at a Waterloo Street Wash Bay. He has no prior convictions.
Pereira, 19, however, had been granted probation on a similar charge just over one month ago after he pleaded guilty to the theft of a cell phone valued $120,000 from his father’s boss’ car on February 6 while it was at the Waterloo Street Wash Bay where he worked. On his previous court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, lawyer Peter Hugh successfully pleaded a case for the young man to be placed on probation and other conditions. If convicted of this second crime, he would be in direct violation of his probation and would be subjected to further penalty under the law.
Bail was granted to Pereira and Wallace in the sum of $100,000 each with no objection from the prosecutor and the defendants are expected to return to court on April 11, when statements are expected to be filed. Singh told the court that he is willing to discontinue pursuit of the case if his articles can be returned since he depends on his bicycle for work.
