After an upset loss to Treacle in January, the nation’s premier thoroughbred, Scores Even returned to it’s winning ways on Sunday in the feature A and Lower event of the annual Phagwah Meet at Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club.
With jockey Randolph Richmond in the stirrups, the Kentucky bred race horse was given full rein on the homestretch and used it’s superior finishing speed to pull away from from the rest of the cavalry.
The win was worth a hefty $1M.
The six furlongs race ran off at a blistering pace with Country Armagh, Jack Is My Style, Got to Go, Score’s Even, Money In return and California Strike all in the money.
Country Armagh then galloped to a slight advantage but Score’s Even was lurking.
The two grey horses were soon neck to neck as Score’s Even changed gears.
However into the homestretch, Richmond whipped the race horse known for it’s finishing prowess and it easily pulled away for the win.
Got to Go ran past a fading Country Armagh and Jack is My Style rounded out the top four.
In other results of the day, Milwaukee Blitz trampled the field thanks to a scorching finish to earn it’s first win on local soil by racing away with the D3 and lower event and the $400,000 and trophy.
In a close encounter, the steed won from a fast finishing Some Legend, Red and Lovely and Its My Turn.
Other winning steeds on Sunday were Shooting star of the Sheriff stable (7F event for G1), Royal Cash (Three year old), Mary Ann (I and lower 6F race) and Iron Man (In the two J class events)
The top jockey was Ajai Sansarran.
In excess of 75 horses had entered in the day’s event which had over $6M at stake.
