A Grove labourer, who admitted that he had stolen over $100,000 worth of items and had then attempted to escape from police custody after his capture, was yesterday sentenced to 30 months in prison after begging for leniency from the magistrate.
Kishore Dookie, 42, of 48, Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara made his first appearance in court to answer to his break and enter charge along with an escape from lawful custody charge.
Between March 9 and 10, Dookie broke and entered the Herstelling, New Scheme home of Narinda Malvya and stole a Pioneer amplifier, two mobile phones, a bottle of Johnny Walker whiskey and $34,800. The total value of the items, it was revealed, was $107,800.
Two weeks later, Dookie made a bid for freedom from the Providence Police Station. However, he was recaptured, earning himself an escape from custody charge.
The man accepted the facts when they were recounted to the court.
Before Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty could determine an adequate sentence for the man, he appealed to her for leniency. After careful deliberations, Magistrate Mc Gusty sentenced Dookie to 30 months imprisonment for his admitted break and enter charge and a year for his escape attempt from the police station.
He is set to serve his sentences concurrently.
