Kerwin ‘Chisel’ Clarke is the man to beat and he knows it. With his title defence just hours away, ‘Chisel’ spoke exclusively to Stabroek Sport on how he plans to use his sharp physique to slice through the competition and carve out another HRC victory.
In a candid interview with this daily, Clarke discusses being champion, his mental state of mind, the physique
he will bring to the stage and his predictions for tomorrow night’s event at the National Cultural Centre.
Clarke also had a message for the competition. “They will be collectively battling for second.”
Is Clarke truly the man to beat at this year’s HRC?
KC: It is not a matter of thinking, I know I am the man to beat but I’m not taking anybody lightly, I will be bringing my A game with the intention of retaining my HRC title.
EC: What do think of the competition?
KC: It will be a very good show, there will be a lot of great physiques on stage but like I said I will be bringing my A game and I am not worried about the competition. I don’t know who will be on stage and I am not making them a study, I’m just focused on being the man to beat on stage.
EC: What have you focused on training more this year?
KC: I haven’t focused on a particular body part, I worked on generally improving my physique so as to be more successful at this year’s HRC and CAC. I generally enhanced my body, it is a bit thicker.
EC: Will you be bigger this year?
KC: Not necessarily bigger, but more pronounced I should say, I’m not sure which weight category I will fall in as yet but when I’m finished with my water depletion process wherever I fall that is where I will be competing. It will either be heavy or light middle, I’m comfortable at any one of those weight classes.
EC: What have you done differently in your prep this year compared to previous years?
KC: I was a bit more dedicated to my training, the intensity with my training and diet was a more on point. I was more disciplined and committed to the gym despite suffering an injury to my right patella during my prep.
EC: How has it been being Mr. HRC, have you had distractions?
KC:I try my best to remain focused, I haven’t taken anything for granted, I’m a committed person in a committed relationship so the distraction is not really there for me.
EC: Do you feel more pressure this year being the champion?
KC: Going into this meet the tension is arising, I won’t say I am under pressure I would say the feeling was the same from 2012 before I was the champion. I think it will be a great show and I am ready to combat and win this year.
Clarke is also double CAC bronze medalist (2012 and 2013) and the reigning Mr. Guyana. Tomorrow’s show is scheduled to commence at 19:00hrs. Tickets cost $1500. The guest poser for the event is IFBB Pro, Jeff ‘Classic’ Beckham.
