Two of the three local pugilists competing in the three-night Goodwill Tournament in St. Lucia recorded wins on the first night of competition on Friday night.
According to reports out of Castries, Ron Smith (69kg) and Delon Charles (56kg) padded their records while Bert Braithwaite (64kg) suffered a narrow defeat.
Smith out boxed St. Lucian Ron Bastien on points while Charles also won on points against another St. Lucian, Joshua Duberry.
St. Lucian, Lindell ‘The Russian’ Marcelin however turned the tables Braithwaite and earned a points victory.
Braithwaite had defeated Marcelin last month when the two matched gloves in the Godwill tournament hosted here.
The tournament continued last night and will conclude tonight.
St. Lucia’s tournament has attracted Simon Pures from that island, Guyana, Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe matching gloves for medals and bragging rights.
The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has ramped up the exposure of its boxers internationally as a means of maximizing the chances of Guyana medaling at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
Guyana’s contingent is scheduled to return tomorrow.
