East La Penitence resident Orlando James will be spending the next three years in jail after being convicted of possession of marijuana, which police found hidden in the crotch of his pants.
James, 24, of East La Penitence Housing Scheme, had maintained his innocence but was found guilty by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday. He had been on trial for allegedly having 25 ½ grammes of cannabis on his person on February 6 at Freeman Street, East La Penitence.
It was the police’s case that James, at 2:30 am, was riding a pedal cycle along Freeman Street when police ranks, who were on patrol in the area, noticed him acting in a suspicious manner. As a result, he was subsequently stopped and searched.
According to prosecutor Adduni Inniss, the ranks discovered seeds, weed and stems, that they suspected to be cannabis in the crotch of James’ pants. Inniss further stated that James was cautioned, arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station, where he was charged.
In addition to the sentence, the Magistrate also imposed a $10,000 fine on James.
