Charlestown upset the highly favoured Tiger Bay football team 3-1 when the first annual Grassroots Foundation Inter-Ward knockout tournament continued on Tuesday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
Charlestown would take the early lead in the fifth minute as Jamal Cozier netted from the penalty spot, placing his effort into the left side of the net following a handball infringement rom a resulting free kick.
They would double their lead in the 20th minute as veteran Leon Yaw netted from a right sided corner kick which evaded all the members within the penalty area, before settling into the left hand corner of the goal.
Joel Barnes scored in the 56th minute for the Tiger Bay side, powering his header off the crossbar and into the back of the framework from the centre of the box, after receiving a right sided corner kick.
Tiger Bay’s pursuit of the equaliser would be dealt a severe blow in the 76th minute as striker Deon Alfred was shown a straight red card for striking the opposing custodian.
Charlestown would quickly take advantage of their numerical advantage as they completed the upset victory in the 78th minute through a Cozier right footed strike into the back of the net after cutting into the left side of the box.
In the earlier fixture, East Bank of Demerara side Mocha Champs defeated Alberttown/Bourda by a 4-2 margin.
