Child rights art competition launched

The National Assembly in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) and the University of Guyana will be hosting a child rights art competition.

A release from Parliament Office said that the competition was launched on Thursday in Committee Room Two at the Public Buildings, Brickdam.

The aim of the art competition, which is being hosted under the theme ‘Child Rights and Governance,’ is to encourage and bring visibility to child rights in Parliament, focusing on governance and child rights. This will contribute to the larger objective of creating an image that promotes the rights of children to live free and fulfilling lives, to be free from all forms of violence, abuse, and abuse of every kind, the release said.

It added that given Parliament’s key role in advancing the rights of children, it has created a biennial art competition for children by partnering with local, regional and international organisations.

This art competition is open to children in a range of age groups (4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-18 years), and will provide opportunities for children in all 10 administrative regions, including those in vulnerable settings such as disadvantaged ‘street’ children, to develop self-expression by interpreting the theme.

Children can submit artwork to be judged in the following categories: 4-12 years, drawing and painting: poster, emulsion, pastel, pencil, charcoal, chalk, crayons and mixed media; 13-18 years, drawing: pencil, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, crayon, chalk and etchings; 13-18 years, painting: oil, gauche, water colour, acrylic, emulsion, poster, enamel, and mixed media; 13 years, craft: fired or green ware ceramics, decorative and fibre arts, print making, textile designing or manipulation, assemblage – mosaic, collage, montage and leather craft, etc.
