A Timehri man was killed yesterday after being hit by a truck while riding along the Coverden, East Bank Demerara public road.
Aubrey Clark, 47, of Timehri Public Road, was riding his bicycle north along the Coverden Public Road, within the vicinity of the Jettoo’s Lumber Yard, while pickup truck, GNN 3686 was parked on the western side of the road, when the accident occurred at around 2:30pm.
Eyewitnesses said around the same time, two trucks—GMM 4826 and GPP 818—were also proceeding north along the roadway, transporting barreled fuel. It was further stated that one of the trucks, GMM 4826, was pulling the other truck.
At the same time, police were escorting an official and upon hearing the sirens, the driver of the tow truck, Ganesh Bassre, pulled in the corner and the driver of the truck being towed pulled into the corner as well. However, the driver of the second truck, Lawrence Lamazon, appeared to have pulled too far into the corner and subsequently collided with Clark.
The truck then slammed into the parked pickup truck, taking Clark’s body with it. Eyewitnesses said the pickup truck was subsequently dragged approximately 25 ft away from where it was initially parked.
One of Clark’s feet was almost completely severed and his body was contorted, according to eyewitnesses. It is believed that he died instantly.
“I heard the noise and the police siren and when I came out I saw the pickup damaged up and then I see the two trucks and like five minutes after I saw him (Clark) but I didn’t really look because I don’t look at dead people,” an eyewitness said.
The man added that the police escorts that were passing briefly stopped to look at the accident but continued on their way. Subsequently, police officers attached to the Madewini Police Station visited the scene of the accident. The drivers of the two trucks were later seen being escorted to the Timehri Police Station lockups as their family members wept.
Speaking with Stabroek News, Kathy Clark, the older of the dead man’s two daughters, described him as a hardworking and God fearing man, who took care of his responsibilities. He was a good father, she said.
Clark mowed lawns for a living. As she sobbed uncontrollably, the woman said her father had just received a phone call from a customer, who informed him that he was needed to weed a plot of land at Coverden. In addition to weeding, she said, he also engaged in carpentry.
