What has this society become?
I just read on INews about an employee of a government agency hitting a nurse with his car and driving away without rendering assistance. Is it any wonder? A letter writer yesterday warned the parliamentarians to be careful how they conduct themselves because the general public would look to them for their cue.
The Minister of Finance, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, crashed his SUV into another vehicle and subsequently left the scene of the accident. This officer from the government agency had his cue.
What is troubling though is the fact that this officer works for an agency that is supposed to enforce the laws as it relates to a sector of the economy. If he cannot observe the law, how can we expect him to enforce it? This is so typical of other law enforcement operatives who act as though the law does not apply to them.
A case in point, the law states that drivers and passengers must wear their seatbelts. Let us check and see how many policemen wear their seatbelts.
I would urge the Magistrates in this country to throw the whole book at persons who fail to stop after an accident, especially if that person works in a regulatory organisation. This is becoming a new sore in the already sore-covered skin of Guyanese society.
