Having entered the most entries in almost every class it was no surprise that Mrs Mary McDonald won many of the prizes and was awarded the Overall Winner in 2014 Flower Show held at the Umana Yana last Sunday, walking away with the Miracle Gro prize and trophy. Some of the other winners in Classes 1-23 were:- Alison Noord, Charles Nelson, Debbie and Peggy Chin, Lousie Joseph, Arlene Ross,
Nelissa Persaud and Vanessa Wallerson.
In the children’s Class – Class 21 – De Andre Manbodh and Uriah Joseph won.
Competitors must be commended for their interest and the time they invested, although the weather was harsh on the exhibits and plants. Congratulations to all the winners. One noticeable oversight was that the winners’ names were not written on their displays.
On the commercial side of the show, vendors did brisk business selling their plants, fertilizers, garden tools and accessories. Carib-bean Chemicals give advice on pests and chemicals; NAREI did a demonstration on citrus plants; Garden-land Nursery did a demonstration on how to use Miracle Gro products and how to apply Miracle Gro plant food on orchids and all other plants.
It was a rainbow of colours in all booths where exotic, rare and local plants were displayed and sold. The cacti were a big hit. Seeds and bulbs producing dazzling colours and varieties were on sale. Many species of orchids too were sold. Amazingly, buyers were quite surprised with Vandas growing in baskets without bark or coals and yet were in full bloom. Of course, we heard sad stories about people forgetting to water their plants and they dried out and died. Many viewers attended the show on both days and the Tea Shop had the right garden atmosphere for them to relax and enjoy their tea. Also wine-tasting was available, the wines all made from local fruits. The Horticultural Society must be encouraged to keep the show going and keep up the interest.
