Powerlifters from the Fitness Freaks and the BodyMaxx Gym had a gala time as they won the marquee titles at yesterday’s annual Junior and Novices Powerlifting Championships at the National Gymnasium.
Fitness Freak’s Roger Callendar stole the show in the novices group by winning the best lifter title.
Bodymaxx’s Andrea Smith won the same title in the female category.
Her total was 280kg. Her lifts were 102.5kg (squat), 47.5kg (bench press) and 130kg (deadlift). Her wilks totaled 336.056 points.
Callendar, the 74kg lifter, showed plenty of promise with a total of 590kg.
The Fitness Freaks CEO squatted 225kg, bench pressed 137.5kg and dead lifted 227.5kg. His wilks points accumulated to 434.653.
The 31-year old strong man’s lifts are surely only the beginning in his powerlifting career, but were the culmination of eight months of training.
Calendar called yesterday’s meet, “a learning experience” and thus is optimistic bigger lifts are in his future as he refines his technique.
Like most of the novices and even some of the experienced lifters, the personal fitness trainer is working on incorporating his lower body more on his bench-press.
Kevin Briglall from the Hardcore Gym was adjudged the overall winner of the sub junior/junior category.
Briglall who lifted in the 59kg category, had to total of 480kg and 423.168 wilks points.
Seniors, Mariano Jeffrey and Osmond Mack guest lifted at the event.
There was also a novelty bench press competition for lifters over and under 200 pounds.
The sum of 28 athletes competed yesterday.
Lead sponsors included Fitness Express, Ansa McAL and the United Mega Store.
Notes: Powerlifting consists of three events – the squat, deadlift and bench press – during which competitors lift successively heavier weights in three attempts. Their best lift from each of the three events comprise an overall total.
