A 17-year-old employee of the Keishars Gift Shop was yesterday charged with stealing a phone from the city store.
Magistrate Faith McGusty placed Jonathan Danraj, who is accused of stealing a BlackBerry smartphone, on $50,000 bail after he denied the accusation during his arraignment at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Danraj, of Lot 76 Block ‘X’ Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, according to the prosecution’s case, stole the smartphone, valued at $65,000, between the period March 11 and March 21 2014, at Georgetown.
Danraj was represented by lawyer Paul Fung-A-Fat.
Bail was granted with no objections from Prosecutor Seon Blackman. However, Blackman did ask the magistrate to attach conditions to the granting of bail. As a result, Magistrate McGusty ordered that Danraj report to the Brickdam Police Station’s Criminal Investigations Department every Friday until the outcome of the case.
The case will be called again on April 14. Also charged with stealing yesterday was a labourer, who was also placed on bail.
Wesley Ferdinand, of Lot 127 Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, refuted the police’s claim that he, during the period March 13 to March 18, stole a hand cart, valued at $20,000, a cooler, valued at $18,000, and a quantity of non-alcoholic beverages, valued at $55,000, which were the property of Virginia Bernard.
Bail for Ferdinand, who told the court that he works as a labourer at a car wash, was subsequently set at $60,000 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The case will be called again on April 25.
