The Whim Community Centre announced plans to incorporate operations of the Whim Health Centre into the community’s health plan to better promote healthy lifestyles, at the monitoring and evaluation exercise for the Berbice Regional Health Authority (BRHA) held recently.
Chairperson of the Management Committee Lorna Alexander said the community also plans to better utilise its new outfield to promote exercise and has already planned to host a day of sports, according to a press release.
Nurse-in-charge at the Whim Health Centre Carol Benn also spoke of the high level of motivation and support provided
to the staff in her report. Benn, who is also a midwife, declared that in 2015 the Centre will be among those vying for the prestigious Best Health Centre Award. The Siparuta Health Centre won this award at the 11th Annual Award Ceremony hosted by the BRHA in February.
The Whim Health Centre which is located within the compound of the community centre has recently been upgraded with a concretised floor, which serves as a waiting area, and an outdoor shed. The fence has also been repaired and the outfield resurfaced even as work is nearlt finished on a new cricket pitch.
“Life has returned to the facility which also has a pavilion and every afternoon youths pour in to participate in cricket and other physical activities,” the press release said. Captain of the Whim Cricket Team Arnold Deosaran said over 60 youths turn out daily to engage in cricket coaching sessions hosted by the Berbice Cricket Board of Control. He said the cricket ground was restored with government funds and for several months the facility has been buzzing with life.
Meanwhile, CEO of the Berbice Regional Health Authority BRHA Dr Vishwa Mahadeo said the facility has made a notable improvement in its services since 2012. In his feature address, Mahadeo said it was refreshing to receive positive reviews from the public as the facility had underperformed in the years leading up to 2012.
The facility serves over 6,000 residents residing between Whim and Bloomfield on the Corentyne.
In addition, Senior Health Visitor Terry Davis under whose direct supervision health centres falls commended the six staff for raising their level of output at Whim.
