President Donald Ramotar said the passing of Professor Norman Girvan is an immense loss for the Caribbean as the region has benefited from his sharp analyses spanning myriad issues.
As far as Guyana was concerned, he said, this country has valued the wisdom which he brought to the Good Offices Process as the Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General.
According to a press release Ramotar said that Girvan’s “writing and sharp analyses spanning a myriad of issues, demonstrated always a sincerity in contributing to solutions to the challenges of the economic and social development of the wider Caribbean.”
Further, he noted, Girvan’s vision for the region’s integration was driven by a profound desire for the peoples of the Caribbean Community to benefit from sustained socio-economic development in a single space.
“We have indeed lost a great Caribbean icon,” Ramotar said.
The president extended condolences to Girvan’s wife and relatives.
