Mayor Hamilton Green said there will be no sale of spots for Easter Monday activities along the seawall and the public is free to utilise any section of the area in keeping with tradition.
Last week Wednesday, Green issued a memo to Town Clerk Carol Sooba, informing her that contrary to a press release purportedly signed by her on March 31 advertising the sale of spots along the seawall from between the Seawall Band Stand to the University of Guyana road, the public will continue in keeping with established tradition.
The mayor said he understands that instructions have been given to commence the sale of spots from Tuesday April 1 to Saturday April 20 for “Persons operating for the purpose of vending, picnicking, kite flying or otherwise.” However, he recalled that during discussions with the City Council’s Finance Committee, no agreement had been made for the sale of spots. “Beyond this, your notice is unclear whether these spots include vending, picnicking and kite flying. The final paragraph of your letter implies that vending, picnicking and kite flying are all inter-related,” he said.
The memo was copied to Local Government Minister Norman Whittaker, the City Treasurer and Chief Constable.
