Fingerprint match lands Grove man on larceny charge

A Grove, East Bank Demerara man yesterday found himself before a city court accused of stealing over $100,000 from a parked car after police said his fingerprints were found at the crime scene.

Jason Hunte, 44, denied that on November, 7, 2013, at Camp Street, he stole $196,000, which was the property of Ashram Ali.

It is the police’s case that Hunte, a taxi driver, broke into Ali’s parked car in front of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Camp Street. According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, upon Ali’s return, he found the side quarter glass window shattered and the money missing. A report was made and the defendant was subsequently charged.

The court heard that the Hunte was apprehended by the police on another charge. Jones added that Hunte’s fingerprints were taken and analysed and it was discovered that they matched those taken from Ali’s car.

Jones objected to bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence, in addition to the circumstances of the crime.

Hunte’s lawyer Paul Fung-A-Fat, in an effort to secure bail, told the court that Hunte strongly denied the allegation levelled against him.

However, Magistrate Ann McLennan ruled in favour of the prosecution and remanded Hunte to prison. The case will be heard again on May 13.
