Under the theme “Rising to great heights through reading” the National Library hosted its second annual Easter Parade. The parade culminated a three-week workshop during which the children learned to make and decorate Easter hats and baskets, according to the Head of the Juvenile Department, Francesca Burgess. That department she added, organised the event.
At 10:00 hrs the parade began in front of the National Library on Church Street, participants then marched north onto Carmichael Street, west into Lamaha, south onto Main Street and ended in the compound of the National Library on Church Street.
The coordinator of the National Library’s Extension Programme, Margaret Eastman, told Stabroek News that the response from the public was overwhelming.
Eastman noted that for next year’s parade the National Library is hoping to extend an invitation to the schools. She said that children were drawn from the Central branch of the library, as well as the Ruimvedt and Bagotville branches. She thanked parents who volunteered three Saturdays to assist the children create the hats.
Additionally Eastman told this publication that the Parade was the brainchild of the late chief librarian Gillian Thompson and will continue in her honour. Thompson before her untimely passing had also established a reading challenge programme and a toy library at the National Library.
