Digicel recently partnered with some private sector companies to participate in a Tech Day Camp for Girls, the precursor to the Girls in ICT global movement aimed at fostering more involvement by girls in the Information Communications Technology (ICT).
Girls in ICT is a global effort spearheaded by the International Telecommunications Union to encourage more women to get involved in the ICT sector worldwide, a press release from the cellular phone company said. This year, observances will be held on April 24 under the theme ‘Expanding horizons, changing minds.’
In Guyana the promotions are organized by the National Frequency Management Unit and as a telecommunications partner, Digicel is taking part in the programme. On April 8 and 9, Digicel joined other private sector companies and the NFMU at two tech camps held in Berbice and Linden, respectively. Adellie Lee, IT Application Specialist; Deepa Rohit, Quality Assurance Trainer CCTech and Phebe Joseph, Project Office (Technical) made presentations at the forum which was attended by over 500 girls from 15 schools.
Ramona Smart, a student from Berbice, told representatives at the Digicel booth that she was glad that she had decided to participate. “Today I learnt a lot about ICT; it was a great experience for me. I thought today would be very boring but I’m really glad I came….I think after today I will pursue a career in ICT.” The girls were given prizes for asking and answering questions correctly at the Digicel booth.
