A self-professed teacher, accused of threatening to kill his brother, was yesterday granted bail after claiming that the police had been too “jealous” of him to take his own reports of threats.
Brian Matheson, 38, of 48 Princes Street, Wortmanville, was accused of using threatening language towards his brother, Mark Matheson, on April 9. The man denied the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, the men lived together at the Wortmanville address.
When given an opportunity to speak, Brian said that he was a teacher of multiple subjects including Agricultural Science and Art, though he did not mention at which school he taught.
However, an officer notified the prosecutor that the man was not a teacher. After the message was relayed to the magistrate, who then questioned the defendant, the man stated that the police were “a bit jealous” of him. He added that he would regularly suffer through threats by persons in his area but, when he would make reports of the abuse, the police would ignore his claims.
He concluded that a simple call could be made to verify that he was indeed a teacher.
After no objections were raised by Prosecutor Jones, the man was granted bail in the sum of $20,000 and was placed on a bond to be on good behaviour. He will make his return on May 15.
