The Buxton Youth Developers (BYD) are now beneficiaries of a donation made by Courts Guyana.
At a presentation ceremony hosted by the Main Street Branch of the company yesterday, Courts Guyana donated four gas stoves and five footballs to the BYD, which is a group that aims to provide education for the underprivileged members of the Buxton community as well as school drop-outs. It offers guidance in areas such as Math and English as well as common entrance and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects.
The stoves are to be allocated to the developing BYD Home Economics Department and the footballs to its female football team. Courts Guyana Marketing Manager commended the effort of the group and hoped that the contribution will benefit the school. He said that with the new addition of the stoves, “Girls can develop a trade by learning to cook.” He further stated that Courts endorses the Developer’s strategy of “education through sport” and understands that the donation made by the company must be maintained. He related that Courts is embarking on a sustenance programme, which will maintain the items in an effort to ensure the donation will not be made in vain.
The founder of the Buxton Youth Developers Robin Phillips humbly accepted the donation from Courts on behalf of the organisation. He said that the donations “will take us a far way.”
The BYD initiative was launched in 2007 and has been supported by both local and international groups, such as the Rotary Club, Digicel, and the Canadian International Development Agency, amongst others.
