At the Berbice High Court yesterday, Justice Diana Insanally sentenced two men to 20 years imprisonment each for the June 3, 2012 murder of Marlon Andrew Ramcharran.
Joshua ‘Bun Boy’ Persaud, 22 of Bloomfield, Corentyne and Rapheal ‘Red Head’ Morrison, 24, Auchlyne were found guilty of committing the offence at Tain New Housing.
In his plea of migration, defence counsel, Mursaline Bacchus said the accused were young and can make meaningful contributions.
Before handing down her sentence, the judge said she took into consideration a number of factors, including their time spent in prison.
She lamented the fact that they were consuming alcohol at such a young age and said they seemed to be a set of misguided youngsters.
The men who showed no emotions during the sentencing were also represented by attorney-at-law, Perry Gossai. The lawyers had entered no case submissions, which were overruled by the judge. They had denied knowledge of the murder in unsworn statements from the dock.
Reports are that following an argument with Ramcharran, Persaud and Morrison armed themselves with a cutlass and pieces of wood.
The results of a post-mortem examination conducted by Dr. Nehaul Singh, proved that he died as a result of shock and haemorrhage due to multiple incised wounds.
The youths had been drinking together at the ‘Dusk Till Dawn Nightclub’ when an argument erupted followed by the chopping. Ramcharran sustained wounds to his head, neck and other parts of his body.
State Prosecutor, Renita Singh said Ramcharran was at a bar in the village with his two friends, Nicholas Beharry and Rakesh Jaikarran. They left the bar at 2:30 am and Ramcharran went ahead of them.
They heard him shouting, “You chopping the wrong person” and they ran towards him. They saw when the men continued to chop Ramcharran who collapsed to the ground.
Ramcharran had left home to go to a wake house but he never returned and his relatives were shocked when they received the news that he had been badly chopped.
When they got to the scene they found him lying in a pool of blood and his body seemed lifeless.
