Work on the completion of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Main Street, Georgetown has ground to a halt as funds for the reconstruction of the building dwindle.
A release from Sagacity Media today said that speaking at the church’s annual cross buns sale on Thursday, Melissa De Santos, parishioner and member of the Sacred Heart Rebuilding
Committee, said the fund is very low and as a result, work on the reconstruction has stopped. She said the committee is now considering approaching a commercial bank for additional funds and is
also calling on the private sector to support the rebuilding efforts.
The church was to be reopened in June of this year, but from all indications, De Santos said this will have to be pushed back to a later date this year.
The release said that to help in the rebuilding efforts, the church started a cross buns sale after a devastating fire completely destroyed the building on Christmas morning 2004. The release said that the cross buns sale was again successful this year with over 2,800 bags being sold
out by noon on Thursday.
