North East La Penitence defeated East Ruimveldt 2-0 in their quarterfinal matchup when the first annual Grassroots Foundation inter-ward knockout football tourney continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda on Thursday.
Vincent Thomas almost opened the scoring for East Ruimveldt in the 24th minute through a powerfully struck right footed effort from the right side of the area, which whistled just over the crossbar.
Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant should have given the North East unit the lead in the 40th minute, but his right footed effort from the centre of the area was denied by the opposing goalkeeper at point blank range, following a one-on-one situation.
North East would eventually take the lead eight minutes later as Orvin Millington netted, slotting home his effort from the centre of the box into an open net, after pouncing on a loose ball following miscommunication between defender and keeper in dealing with a right sided cross.
Randolph Wagner would double their lead in the 57th minute through a placed right footed strike into the lower right hand corner, after receiving a flat right cross from Grant within the left side of the area.
The woodwork would deny North East from adding to their tally as a powerfully struck Millington right footed effort from just outside the right side of the penalty box, came crashing off the crossbar in the 71st minute.
They would be denied once again from adding to their score in the 83rd minute as a well struck Phillip Rowley attempt from the left side of the box, was parried around his right post by the opposing custodian.
In the other quarterfinal matchup, Wortmanville/Bent Street squeaked past Charlestown by a 2-1 margin.
