The Berbice Hindu Society yesterday commissioned a mandir at Gay Park, Greater New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The Government Infor-mation Agency reported that President Donald Ramotar called on the Berbice Hindu Society to work with Government to assist in dealing with some of the social issues that plague society.
GINA said that Ramotar referred to violence against women which has become more prevalent, and suicide.
“Today we have to combine that very outlook with working together to try to develop our people… There are many social issues that you have been, and can even make greater contribution towards fighting,” he told those gathered at the ceremony for the Sri Krishna Mandir.
Ramotar urged that they explore the philosophy of Hinduism.
“It will help us to have a deeper appreciation for our women folk…we have also been reading about issues of suicide and this is something we have to struggle against and here too this house of worship can play an important role in helping us to deal with some of these social issues,” the Head of State said.
He added “We also need your support to help us overcome the difficulties that we face… many of the things that we want to bring to the people, not only for economic development, but we feel these things go hand-in-hand that if we improve our social conditions that we will also be improving our economy because we will be developing a higher quality of people,” President Ramotar asserted.
