The remaining Fly Jamaica passengers who were stranded in New York after its aircraft experienced radar problems on Thursday are scheduled to be in Guyana early this morning.
“There was a problem with the radar and … you can’t fly without a radar at night…the flights have been completed and we have one leaving at 7:50(pm) tonight (last night) that will take care of anybody that got left back,” Fly Jamaica’s Chief Executive Officer Captain Ronald Reece told Stabroek News yesterday.
Reece explained that his company had been mulling hiring another aircraft but was told that that aircraft also had some mechanical problems so they decided to wait until their radar was fixed.
Fly Jamaica has only one aircraft that plies the Georgetown-New York route via Kingston, Jamaica.
Stabroek News understands that passengers had already boarded and were ready for departure at the John F Kennedy Airport on Good Friday when airline officials notified them of a mechanical problem.
The airline placed the stranded passengers in a New York hotel for the night and the plane left on Saturday according to the new schedule.
Reece said that the delay was not something travellers should be worried about as delays and cancellations come with the territory.
He said that he was pleased that the airline fulfilled its obligations in getting the passengers to their destinations and he apologized profusely to passengers who were inconvenienced.
