A labourer accused of stealing a Samsung Galaxy smartphone is now on $75,000 bail, after he denied the allegation during his arraignment before a city magistrate yesterday.
Dwayne Hawker, 30, of 78 West Ruimveldt Georgetown, denied that he stole the smartphone, valued at $70,000 and which was the property of Steven Williams. “I was at work on that day,” Hawker told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The defendant, who told the court that he was charged with armed robbery nine years ago, was granted bail with no objections from Police Prosecutor Michael Grant.
The case will be called again on May 23, when statements are expected to be filed.
